A few words about Liferay Portal
Liferay Portal is one of the leading web platforms for portal business solutions development. First of all Liferay Portal is considered to be a corporate portal solution but the platform can be used for other aims as well. The fact that this is an open source solution allows Liferay to progress quite fast and allows developers to change initial application functionality entirely in order to implement particularly specific solutions.
The product along with solutions from IBM, Oracle, SAP and Microsoft takes leading positions according to the report Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals made by Gartner Company. This means it was endorsed for both characteristics – comprehensiveness of vision and implementability. For the moment, Liferay is one of the most widely distributed products of this type.
The product keeps evolving. Currently Liferay Portal 7 is being developed actively. A lot of important innovations and improvements both – architectural and functional – are expected.
In 2012 we completed a project for Ltd. “Nevskaya Cosmetika” and successfully migrated company internal corporate portal to Liferay Portal platform 6.1.1 CE GA2. Within the scope of the project the portal was integrated with existing Customer solutions (such as internal workflow system, product catalog, stock, customer goods reviews). Above that an additional module was designed to enable sales representatives’ tasks planning and work results monitoring. This module represents the structure of employees with different roles assigned (superior – subordinate) and provides functionality to monitor of subordinates activities.
This way the portal became a unified access point to all business solutions required by employees. We accomplished roll-out of the Portal and its precise set-up on the customer side, as well as other systems optimization in order to improve overall software performance.
Later on, we implemented a dedicated functionality to download and display reports generated by SAP R/3 system. We also developed and implemented an additional module designed to track employees’ knowledge of supplied products. This module allows employees to take online tests and offers detailed statistics on testing results along with reports generation tool.
Online language courses platform Lingvomaster is an example of B2C solution developed on Liferay Portal platform 6.2 CE GA4. Within the scope of this project functionality of creation and using educational courses in both ways – individually and in groups – was implemented. For this purpose, Liferay Portal organizational structure was set-up and extended..
Courses and educational groups were differentiated respectively according to levels of access as opened, closed and provided on demand. The type of membership is defined by the registration process: open, closed, on demand. The site combines implementation of specific processes, educational materials (represented by Liferay content management system and document library) and various educational and operational web services implemented as portlets, e.g. interactive exercises, tests, journals, tasks requiring extended responses, interfaces for management of course or group membership and other tools. To enable project monetization, the site was integrated with online payment system “Yandex Money”.
User interface is multilingual; in the current version it is localized in Russian, English, and German.
Site look&feel was adopted to fit the subject area. This was done with help of such technologies as CSS/LESS, Velocity и JS/jQuery.
